This book includes introducing readers to both (a) the theory and research findings needed to understand how to make groups effective and (b) the skills required to apply that knowledge in practical situations. Expertise in working in groups is based on an integration of such knowledge and skills. It is more than a book reviewing current knowledge in the area of small groups, and it is more than a book of skill-building exercises. The theory and exercises are integrated into an inquiry or experiential approach to learning about the dynamics of small groups. This book reflects the new developments in theory and research by taking an updated look at what we know about group dynamics. It focused on the characteristic dynamics found in virtually all groups. Examples are used from all walks of life, because it is intended to serve as an introduction to group dynamics.
